Forest Engineering 2022

This course encompasses all of the presentations from the 2022 NER.COFE Workshop. Each topic corresponds to each of the individual presentations and are approved for 0.5 Category 1 Forester Licensing credits by both SAF and the State of Maine.

The cost for all 11 topics is $100.00 which is to cover recording, processing, and online fees, and will continue to support the NER.COFE organization as the in-person workshop does. Topic 3: Workforce Issues Presentation

A discussion of some of the programs used by industry professionals to help solve the workforce issues for forest products companies today.

Topic 4: Forest Market Update

An update of current forest product markets in the region.

Topic 5: New Markets for Low-Grade Forest Products

Speaker: Shane O'Neill, Forest Industry Business Development Manager-UMaine

A discussion of some potential/new markets for low-grade forest products based on research and testing ongoing at the UMaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center.

Topic 6: Deer Wintering Areas

Speaker: Dan Hill, Deer Habitat Biologist-Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

Managing forest lands with consideration for our wintering deer herd.

Topic 7: Latest Bird Survey Update

Speaker: Joseph Roy, Private Lands Wildlife Biologist-Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

Discussion of some of the latest survey data and forest management recommendations around some of our threatened bird species.

Topic 8: Moose/Winter Ticks

Speaker: Lee Kantar, State Moose biologist-Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

The status and management of our Moose herd as a result of winter tick infestations, and associated forest management guidelines/recommendations associated with enhancing Moose habitat.

Topic 9: Shoreland Zoning Presentation

Speaker: Terri Coolong-Maine Forest Service

A review and discussion of current shoreland zone rules and guidelines.

Topic 10: State GIS/Lidar Presentation

Speaker: Dan Hayes, Dave Sandilands-UMaine

A presentation ab out what data sets are available to our forestry professionals from the region's state facilities.

Topic 11: Forest Pest & Disease Update

Speaker: Michael Parisio-Maine Forest Service

An update on what forest pests and diseases are still a threat to the health and vigor of our forests, and ideas on how to manage for them.
